Why NFC for guard tour verification

NFC tags are the most rugged option for environments where QR codes fail: outdoor sites exposed to weather, industrial facilities with dust, underground parking with no light, vandal-prone areas. PatrolTech scans NFC checkpoints in under a second, no camera required, even without network coverage. Every read is logged with GPS, timestamp and immutable evidence for audits.

QR limitations in real-world environments

When QR codes are not enough

Weather and wear

QR stickers fade in sunlight, get wet and become unreadable after months of exposure.

Insufficient lighting

Parking lots, basements and service areas with no light make it impossible to focus the camera.

Vandalism and physical damage

A QR sticker can be ripped or covered with tape in seconds. Encapsulated NFC resists sabotage.

Operational speed

Long routes slow down when guards must open camera and scan. NFC works by proximity, no app fiddling.

Photo-and-reuse risk

A QR can be photographed and rescanned from home. NFC requires physical proximity to the tag.

Compliance with mandates

Some public-sector tenders require NFC as anti-fraud tech. PatrolTech ships with this out of the box.

How NFC guard tour works

1

1. Place NFC tags

Distribute IP68 NFC tags across checkpoints. Works on metal, plastic or glass with professional adhesives or screws.

2

2. Pair from the app

Tap the supervisor's phone to each tag to bind it to a dashboard checkpoint. Full setup in minutes.

3

3. Guards patrol

During the round, guards simply tap the phone on the NFC tag. The app validates proximity, GPS and expected sequence in one motion.

4

4. Immutable audit trail

Each read is logged with timestamp, geolocation and unique tag ID. Full history ready for SOC 2 / ISO 27001 audits.

Advantages over traditional QR

PatrolTech NFC: the most rugged verification on the market

IP68 anti-vandal tags

Resistant to water, dust, impact and extreme temperatures. Years without maintenance.

Instant tap-to-read

Proximity verification in under a second. No camera, no focus, no delay.

Impossible to copy

Unlike QR, NFC tags cannot be duplicated or photographed. Only physical proximity reads.

100% offline mode

Works without internet. The app auto-syncs when coverage returns, no records lost.

QR + NFC + GPS together

Use NFC where it matters and QR where it's enough. GPS and geofencing run on both.

Public tender ready

Meets NFC requirements in government contracts and large enterprise procurement.

Why PatrolTech NFC over legacy solutions

Most competitors still sell proprietary terminals with limited NFC or generic QR forks. PatrolTech integrates NFC as a first-class citizen in the same mobile app your guards already use — no expensive hardware, with anti-fraud geofencing and real offline mode.

  • Certified IP68 NFC tags
  • No proprietary terminals — any Android phone works
  • Hardware-grade anti-fraud geofencing (not just approximate GPS)
  • Real offline mode with delta sync
  • Bulk import from existing QR systems in under 5 minutes
  • Third-party tag support (NTAG 213/215/216, Mifare Classic)

Frequently asked about NFC

Which phones support PatrolTech NFC?

All Android phones with NFC enabled (>=95% of current market). On iOS it works from iPhone 7 onwards. The app auto-detects hardware availability.

How much do NFC tags cost?

Industrial IP68 NFC tags cost EUR 1.50 to 4.00 per unit depending on rugged level. PatrolTech does not charge per tag — only the SaaS plan per guard.

Can existing QR checkpoints be imported?

Yes. PatrolTech supports 1:1 migration from existing QR systems (Silvertrac, QR-Patrol, etc.). Checkpoints stay; just add the NFC tag on top of the QR.

What happens if the phone runs out of battery mid-patrol?

NFC reads stay in offline memory as soon as the guard re-opens the app. If the phone shuts down entirely, the supervisor gets an inactivity alert and can trigger response protocol.

Does NFC replace QR or complement it?

It complements it. PatrolTech supports both in parallel: QR for low-risk spots, NFC for harsh environments or tender requirements. The audit unifies both in the same dashboard.

Does NFC work without internet?

Yes. NFC verification, GPS geofencing and photo/video evidence all run 100% offline. Sync to the dashboard happens when the guard regains coverage.
